Do you have patients who are chronically late no matter how many reminders you send? Dental Intelligence has you covered! By creating a custom appointment buffer code and attaching it to a patient's appointment, our automated communications will notify them of an earlier start time — keeping your schedule full without blocking extra time.

How Appointment Buffers Work in Denticon

Appointment buffers are triggered by the Reason/Procedure field in Dental Intelligence. The Reason/Procedure value mirrors the ADA code pulled directly from Denticon, so it’s important that the procedure codes in Denticon are set up correctly for buffers to activate as expected.

When an appointment is scheduled, the system reads the Reason/Procedure code assigned to it. For a buffer to trigger correctly:

  • The procedure code’s “Code” field in Denticon must match the MOD code appointment buffer configured in Dental Intelligence.

  • The Procedure Type for the code must be set to Medical in order to save the MOD code in Denticon.

  • You may use any code — the key requirement is that the code in Denticon and the code in Dental Intelligence match exactly.

Note: The “Medical” Procedure Type is a Denticon-specific requirement and is necessary for the system to accept and save MOD codes correctly. If the Procedure Type is not set to Medical, the code may not save as expected.

How to Create Appointment Buffers Using MOD Codes in Denticon

  1. Navigate to Setup > Procedure Codes > Procedure Codes

  2. Click + Add New Code

  3. Create the following MOD codes in Denticon:

    1. MOD10 (10 minutes)

    2. MOD15 (15 minutes)

    3. MOD30 (30 minutes)

    4. MOD45 (45 minutes)

    5. MODNO (no automated appointment reminders)

  4. In the Code field, enter the MOD code (ie, MOD10)

  5. In the Description field, provide a short description of the MOD code

  6. Set the Procedure Type to Medical. This is required to save the code successfully in Denticon

  7. Set the Insurance Category to None

  8. Be sure that the Insurance Billing Order is set to Do not bill to insurance

  9. Click Save when finished

Update Existing Appointment Buffer Codes

If your office already has appointment buffer codes in Denticon and would prefer to update the MOD code configuration to match what you currently have — rather than adding new codes — you can reach out to our support team to make that change.

DI Support can manually update the Dental Intelligence configuration to align your appointment buffers with the procedure codes already in Denticon.
