Open Dental: Collections Not Matching (Unearned Splits)

If you’re noticing that your collections in Open Dental aren’t matching Dental Intelligence, It probably means that you have unearned splits turned on in Open Dental.

When you have these turned on, it forces Open Dental to process all your data using accrual based accounting. Dental Intelligence is showing your collections using cash based accounting, so you can see how this can be a problem.

The good news is, it’s an easy fix in Open Dental to switch over to cashed based accounting. Almost every single dental practice out there uses cash based accounting, so let’s take a look at how to do make this change.  

  1. Pull up Open Dental:

  2. Click on Setup -> Account

  3. Find “Enforce Valid Pay Splits” and change to  “Don’t Enforce"

You're done!

Once this is switched off, it will take a few weeks for everything to get caught up and corrected. After 3 - 4 weeks, you’ll notice that your collections in Open Dental will match Dental Intelligence, as both will be using cash based accounting.
