The Phone Numbers dashboard in the Voice portal lists every phone number on your account. From here you can view and manage your numbers, order new ones, or transfer (port) numbers you already own from another carrier.
To get there, select Phone Numbers under Telephony in the sidebar menu of the Voice portal.
Finding a number
Numbers are sorted into three tabs:
Tab | What's here | Columns shown |
Active | Numbers that are live and can make or receive calls | Phone Number, Outbound Caller ID, Inbound Caller ID Prefix, Usage, Call Routing |
In Progress | Numbers being ported in from another carrier | Phone Number, Status, Call Routing, Carrier, Transfer Date |
Cancelled | Numbers you cancelled, or temporary numbers that expired | Phone Number, Date Cancelled |
Use the search box to filter by phone number, caller ID name, carrier, or call-routing target. If a number doesn't show up, check the other tabs. Click any column heading to sort by it.
Adding numbers
Click the Add Numbers button in the top-right corner, then choose one of two options:
Port Existing Numbers: move numbers you already own from another carrier. This takes about 2–3 weeks. See Porting existing numbers.
Order New Numbers: pick brand-new numbers from available inventory. They're ready to use right away. See Ordering new numbers.
Ordering new numbers
Go to Phone Numbers > + Add Numbers > Order New Numbers
Choose Area Code or ZIP Code, and enter a value, for example
212Optionally, change Quantity to Display to see more or fewer results. The default is 10
Click Search (Tip: Searching by area code is the fastest way to find numbers in a specific region)
Select the numbers you want. You can pick several from one search
Optionally, choose where the new numbers should route calls
Review your order and confirm
New numbers are active as soon as the order completes and appear on the Active tab.
Number limit: Each account can hold up to 25 active numbers by default. If an order would exceed your limit, it's rejected. Contact your platform administrator to raise the limit.
Porting existing numbers
Porting transfers numbers you own from your current carrier to DI Voice. Your numbers keep working with your old carrier until the transfer completes, so there's no downtime.
Before you start, gather:
The Business Telephone Number (BTN), which is the main number on your carrier account.
Your business name and service address, written exactly as they appear on your carrier's records.
Your account number and PIN with the current carrier, if you have them.
A recent Customer Service Record (CSR) or bill from your current carrier. This is optional, but it's the best way to avoid a rejection.
Step 1: Start the port order
Step 1: Start the port order
Go to Phone Numbers > + Add Numbers > Port Existing Numbers
Enter the numbers you want to transfer, one per row. Press Enter to add a row, or click Add Phone Number. To add many at once, paste a list into any row. One number per line, a comma-separated list, or a spreadsheet column all work
Click Continue
The system checks each number's eligibility and identifies its current carrier. If your numbers belong to different carriers, they're automatically split into a separate port order for each carrier.
Step 2: Complete the draft
Step 2: Complete the draft
Fill in the five sections of the port order:
Numbers: Review the numbers being transferred. You can add or remove numbers while the order is a draft
Call Routing: Choose where these numbers should send incoming calls once they arrive. Routing is set up in advance, so calls go to the right place the moment the transfer completes. If you're not ready to decide, choose Set up routing later
Port Details: Enter the BTN, business name, and authorized contact. The account number and PIN are optional
Service Address: Enter the address exactly as your current carrier has it. Address mismatches are the most common reason ports get rejected
Timing & Documents: Choose a requested port date between 5 and 30 business days out, and a time between 8 AM and 8 PM Eastern. Upload a CSR or bill if you have one
Step 3: Review and sign
Step 3: Review and sign
Review the summary on the Review page
Type your full name as your electronic signature
Check the authorization box
Click Approve & Sign
The order is then submitted to your current carrier. Track its progress on the In Progress tab.
Port order statuses
Status | What it means |
Draft | You're still filling in the order. |
Approved | You've signed the authorization. |
Submitted | The order has been sent to the carrier. |
Scheduled | The carrier has confirmed a transfer date. |
Complete | The numbers have transferred and appear on the Active tab. |
Exception | The carrier rejected the order. See If a port is rejected. |
How long porting takes
A standard port usually takes 10–15 business days from submission to completion. The date you choose is a request. Your current carrier confirms the final date and may choose a different one. Rejections add time, so double-check your details and upload a CSR or bill upfront.
If a port is rejected
Open the order on the In Progress tab. It shows Exception status and the reason for the rejection
Click Edit & Resubmit and correct the information
Resubmit the order to the carrier
Managing a number
Click any number on the Active tab to open its detail page.
Inbound calls
Routing target: Choose where incoming calls go: a user, ring group, dial plan, or voice app. To reject all incoming calls on purpose, choose Route to nothing (drop calls).
Inbound Caller ID Prefix: Add a label in front of the caller's name on the phone that answers, so your team knows which number was dialed. For example,
[Acme] John Smith.
Outbound calls
Outbound Calling: Turn this on to let users place calls using this number as their caller ID.
Caller ID Name: Set the name the person you're calling sees. It can be up to 15 characters. Changes can take up to 72 hours, and only one change can be pending per number at a time.
Service location
Service Location sets which of your locations this number is billed to. That location determines the taxes and regulatory fees charged for the number, so choose the site where the number is actually used.
To set it, choose a location from the Service Location dropdown. If you leave it as Not set, the number is billed using one of these, in order:
The location this number is the main number for, if it's the main number for one
Your account's main location, if it isn't
Tip: Most numbers can stay on Not set. Choose a location only when the number is used at a different site than the default above, for example a number used at a second office.
Fax
Fax Enabled: Turn this on to receive faxes on this number. While fax is on, incoming calls are treated as faxes, not voice calls. Learn more about enabling faxing.
Notification Recipients: Add up to 10 email addresses to notify when a fax arrives.
Delete fax documents: Turn this on to stop storing faxes after the notification email is sent. You need at least one notification recipient to use this setting.
Temporary numbers
A temporary number shows a banner with its expiration date. To keep it, click Keep this number, which makes it permanent. If you don't, it's released automatically when it expires and moves to the Cancelled tab with a Temporary label. To try to get it back, click Recover. Recovery isn't guaranteed if the number has been reassigned.
Cancelling a number
The number stops working and moves to the Cancelled tab.
